655 Park Ave
655 Park comprises two buildings with entrances on 67th and 68th Streets. The original canopies at this Park Avenue pre-war co-op lacked character, were dilapidated, and uneven. The project aimed to refresh the canopies while ensuring a seamless approval process at LPC. ECA collaborated with the DOT and Landmark Preservation Commission to harmonize the new canopies with the building and neighborhood, adhering to DOT's strict size and position requirements.
Our focus was on creating unique canopy ceilings, drawing inspiration from vaulting patterns found in groin vaults and tufting seen on garments and cushions throughout history. The objective was to present a contemporary expression of old construction techniques and patterns. Collaborating closely with the canopy fabricator, we ensured the design intent while meeting durability and fireproofing requirements. The result: 655 Park's new canopies on 67th and 68th Streets are now the talk of the block.
