Riverside Drive Apartment

Gut Renovation

Our client, a longtime resident of their pre-war building, had the rare opportunity to expand their home by acquiring the adjacent apartment. After taking this leap, they came to us with various goals, including adding bedrooms, improving lighting, and creating a formal dining room. Our team designed a layout that preserved the architectural charm of their original apartment while making the two units feel cohesive.

A narrow connection between the apartments and the poor condition of the new unit posed challenges. We optimized the layout by shifting walls, widening doorways, and adding pocket doors. The second apartment’s former bedroom became a sitting room, creating a central gathering area that seamlessly linked the two units. Its kitchen and living spaces were converted into a bath and bedrooms. The original apartment’s second bedroom was transformed into a formal dining room, and a wide opening was added to link it to the living room. The original kitchen was minimally reconfigured, and new finishes were added.

New recessed downlighting brightened key areas and highlighted art, while chevron-patterned white oak flooring complemented the original herringbone floors. Custom trim details, matched doors, and carefully sourced historic hardware unified the new spaces with the original apartment, creating a seamless blend of old and new.
